"PAUL BETTANY, LOS ANGELES — Paul Bettany said on Thursday that he and Johnny Depp have not spoken in years, after their text messages were read aloud during Depp’s 2024 libel case against the Daily Mail. The veteran actor, who was portrayed as a close confidant of Depp in media coverage of the trial, told reporters he was mischaracterised and that the court’s disclosure of private texts was “a breach of personal privacy”.
Bettany, 55, clarified that his relationship with Depp ended shortly after the actor’s 2020 defamation suit over the Amber Heard saga. “We had a professional friendship for a few years, but after the trial I stopped any direct contact,” he said. “The narrative that we were inseparable was fabricated for headlines.”
The revelation came as the court examined 2,300 text messages between the two actors, many of which referenced the Heard case. Legal analysts noted that the admission could affect public perception of Depp’s support network, though it is unlikely to alter the verdict already rendered.
Depp’s legal team had previously argued that Bettany’s statements demonstrated a broader pattern of media misrepresentation, a claim the judge dismissed as irrelevant to the libel claim. Bettany’s comments now provide a first‑hand account that contradicts that narrative.
Industry observers say the episode underscores how celebrity litigation can weaponise private communications. “When courts force private chats into the public domain, it erodes trust among peers,” said media law professor Elaine Cheng of Columbia University.
Depp has not responded publicly to Bettany’s remarks. His publicist declined comment when approached for a statement.
The libel case, which concluded in March 2024, resulted in a partial victory for Depp, with the Daily Mail ordered to pay £1.8 million in damages. Bettany’s distancing statement arrives months after the verdict, adding a new layer to the ongoing discourse about celebrity friendships and courtroom exposure.
